The next day, Quinn again grabbed Tarek in the afternoon and they went out into Zamalek. They chatted about Egyptian soccer teams and Nubian culture and what winter was like and the differences between San Francisco and Cairene street food—anything except the project and their suspicions. After a while, Quinn found himself talking about his Hands Across the Sky idea: a glove that would allow you to hold hands with someone else in the world.

“A completely useless project,” he said, laughing. “But it got into my brain for some reason, and won’t let go.”

“Not useless, I think,” Tarek said. “What is more important than taking someone’s hand? Please invent this, and then send me one of the gloves. When you have returned to America and I am lonely in Shobra, I will remember you and I will take your hand.”

“Maybe you could help me,” Quinn said. “I can do the coding, but I need someone to help make the glove.”

“Of course!” Tarek beamed. “Let us make the gloves together.”

Before they returned to the palace, Quinn told Tarek he needed to use the restroom, and he ducked into a café. It was a bit fancier place than the one he and Tarek frequented and in the back, behind the cashier, were two computers with Internet access. One was in use. Quinn took the other.

Back at Orbotica, he and Joey had developed a secret messaging system that allowed them to pretend to be working. Their messages had generally consisted of rude comments about their supervisors or arranging beer dates at the Barrelhead.

Quinn logged on to the Orbotica web framework, praying they hadn’t changed the passwords, and let out his breath in a huff when he got in. He got into the coding environment and scrolled down to the sequestered section he and Joey had used. There he typed in, “Who is Alif Zahir?” and quickly logged out. His heart was pounding.
